The story centers on Dr. Henry Jekyll, a respectable but secretly ambitious scientist in London, who attempts to separate the good and evil elements of his nature using a self-made potion. The experiment results in the creation of Mr. Edward Hyde, a malevolent, physically repulsive creature who acts without conscience or restraint, indulging in increasingly violent and immoral acts, including the brutal murder of a Member of Parliament. Initially, Jekyll maintains control, taking the potion to transform into Hyde for his darker desires, but he soon realizes he is losing the ability to willingly return to his good self. The mounting terror and loss of control lead Jekyll to a desperate final act: realizing that Hyde has completely overtaken him and is inherently evil, he writes a final confession before committing suicide to destroy his wicked counterpart forever.
